How an iPod Touch is changing my life….

On my 30th birthday my sisters, brother in law, aunt and mom all pitched to get me an iPod Touch and it’s changing my life.  I constantly have internal battles with myself on what I did prior to the “technology” era.  At times I find myself rushing home to go back on the computer instead of the gym.  I often think, “I should try to give up the computer for a couple a weeks and see how productive I could be.”  I never end up staying away from it, but I’ve been able to cut down on computer time.  You would think the iPod Touch would be another distraction; however it’s one of the best inventions of our generation and here is why:

Don’t want to be called “Pee-Pants?” Try Kegel Exercises.

A Kegel Exercise is the contracting and relaxing of muscles that form part of the pelvic floor.  I found out about these when I was about 18 years old and to be honest, I had a “WTF?” moment.  It was kind of like, “You can exercise your pum pum…say what??”

Turns out it was the truth and all women should do these to prevent pelvic organ prolapse ( a condition that sometimes results in urine leakage & uncomfortable pelvice pressure), combat urinary problems, & improve your sex life.   After researching the internet for the best explanation of these, I found the Mayo-Clinic website was really informative to share below:

  • Find the right muscles. Insert a finger inside your vagina and try to squeeze the surrounding muscles. You should feel your vagina tighten and your pelvic floor move upward. Then relax your muscles and feel your pelvic floor return to the starting position. You can also try to stop the flow of urine when you urinate. If you succeed, you’ve got the basic move. Don’t make a habit of starting and stopping your urine stream, though. Doing Kegel exercises with a full bladder or while emptying your bladder can actually weaken the muscles, as well as lead to incomplete emptying of the bladder — which increases the risk of a urinary tract infection. ( Click HERE for Diagram of find the right muscle)
  • Perfect your technique. Once you’ve identified your pelvic floor muscles, empty your bladder and sit or lie down. Contract your pelvic floor muscles, hold the contraction for five seconds, then relax for five seconds. Try it four or five times in a row. Work up to keeping the muscles contracted for 10 seconds at a time, relaxing for 10 seconds between contractions
  • Maintain your focus. For best results, focus on tightening only your pelvic floor muscles. Be careful not to flex the muscles in your abdomen, thighs or buttocks. Avoid holding your breath. Instead, breathe freely during the exercises.
  • Repeat three times a day. Aim for at least three sets of 10 repetitions a day. You might make a practice of fitting in a set every time you do a routine task, such as checking email, commuting to work, preparing meals or watching TV

No age is too late to start these. Talk to your doctor if you have any trouble, your doctor can walk you through the right way to do the Kegel Excercises.

Hey! Hey! Hey! Zumba!

8 months after having my 1st child, I am actually at the same weight I was when I was 8 months pregnant. I wish the lbs. would’ve melted off right after having my baby girl, but I actually ended up gaining more weight after Reese Marie was born.  It has been a constant struggle to eat right and work out.  I am sick of the same old 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes on the treadmill and it wasn’t doing anything!! My friend a co-blogger on this site: Fabiola introduced me to Zumba at our gym: XSport Fitness in Arlington Heights.  Zumba is a high impact, intense cardio 1 hour workout that burns calories like crazy.  It is the best cardio workout I have done in a long time and the weight I gained during pregnancy is finally starting to shed.  While Zumba is high impact it is the most fun exercise I have tried in a long time. The word Zumba actually translate in Spanish to: “to move fast and have fun” I strongly urge you to visit your local gym/fitness center to see if they offer this class. You can also check out the official Zumba webpage for more information.  I love, love, love this class and I can’t wait to post my results on my weight loss goal of 50lbs!!

I <3 Earth

earth-day-and-kids1On Earth day I find myself reflecting on how green I’m being. Especially after watching today’s Oprah! I have a sudden urge to go out and buy more kitchen towels, and stop using paper towels every 5 minutes. I want to go buy cloth diapers, cause I don’t want my daughter’s poopy diapers in landfills for eternity (this one is probably not going to happen if I’m being realistic), but will encourage me to potty train her sooner. I want to stop using plastic bags, recycle more, and donate and reuse as much as possible.

Here are some things that we can all do to make our world more green, we’ve all heard them before, but we can all use a reminder. These are just a few suggestions to get you started on a more green path. Continue reading

J-Lo Fashion NO NO!

1442379415_2366054251

Oh no JLO, NO!!!! Why did you have to go there? The curvy fashionista has commited a big NO NO… in my eyes at least. Here she was snapped in an airport in Tokyo Japan, sporting the new fad in fashion, the Harem pants. This style was, to my dismay, all over runways at New York Fashion Week. Continue reading

Tip of the Day – Greasy Hair is a No No

Washing your hair everyday is not good for your locks. Hair professionals have been advising us to skip shampooing probably since shampoo was invented! It dries them out and not to mention that your natural oils are good for your hair.

More and more people are just going to the salon once-a-week for a shampoo and make it last all week long! (and it’s not just the old ladies).

Check out this article in the NY Times:
“Today, as textured locks and full hair begin to eclipse the ironed and Japanese-straightened styles that were previously in vogue, weekly visits to salons are more common among women who were born since the Eisenhower administration. Women say it cuts down on bathroom time by eliminating daily blow-drying and is an excuse for more pampering when everything else has been polished and waxed.

“There’s this whole new breed of young fashionable girls who are getting that once-a-week shampoo and blow dry and just milking it,” said Johnny Lavoy, the owner of Moda-Rey Salon and Spa in West Hartford, Conn. They grew up, he said, “thinking you have to wash your hair every time you shower, but they’re realizing that natural oils are good for the hair.””

A. I’m super excited that full and Continue reading
